Blow flies are an irritating pest. You can hear them, but rarely see them or catch them. Once one shows up, somehow there are more. A nuisance in any home, prevention is key. Consider these tips for how to prevent blow flies from landing in your home.

Getting to know blow flies

There's no area that blow flies won't go, Texas A&M University noted. No matter the climate or time of year, blow flies are there. They feed and lay eggs on decomposing animal remains, which means the pests carry a lot of bacteria. So, when they fly into your home and land on a counter, they're potentially spreading dangerous diseases.

3 ways to prevent a blow fly infestation

  1. Keep food and garbage contained: Flies are dirty. They're attracted to waste and to any food that's been sitting out. One of the best ways to keep flies from landing near you is to keep all trash and food contained as best as possible, Washington State University stated. Always throw trash out immediately and place it in a sealed can. If you notice flies swarming around the trash, spray your cans with insecticide for pest management. Always dispose of the trash once the cans are full at least once a week. If you wait, food and other waste will decompose and attract the flies.

  2. Keep the inside of the house clean: Homeowners should keep their counters and floors clean by wiping them down frequently with house cleaning fluids. Scents from cooking and eating can build on counters and floors that appeal to blow flies. Also, if blow flies do land on counters, it's a good idea to prevent harmful bacteria from spreading by using an antibacterial cleaner.

  3. Seal all house openings: Continually allowing doors and windows to be open will make your home accessible to flies. Always ensure that your windows have screens without holes or tears and that doors are properly sealed. Flies can also access your home using holes where pipes and wires enter your house or sash-cord channels. Check your attic to ensure that vent screens are in good condition. Otherwise, flies may try to nest there when cold weather arrives. Flies will seek warmth in your house, which is why they fly toward light fixtures and the attic. Examine the size of the mesh screen to make sure it's small enough that flies can't cross through it.

If you do have a blow fly infestation, call pest services professionals. Attempting to eliminate the bugs yourself doesn't always work. That's when a professional pest control company like Abell Pest Control can help.
