Identify Your Pest >>

Backyard barbecue grillers aren't the only ones happy when spring comes. Pests everywhere are being awakened by the warming climate and are emerging trying to find food for their families.

From bees, to roaches, to ants, insects answer nature's call according to the weather in their neighborhood, not the date on the human calendar.

"Insects are cold blooded, so they rely on cues from Mother Nature to regulate what they should be doing," Missy Henriksen, vice president of public affairs for the National Pest Management Association, told "They quiet in wintertime. But warmer weather is a wake-up call to insects. A couple days of warm weather shouldn't cause changes in their pattern. But if it continues for several weeks, activity will increase."

A clean yard is your best defense

Experienced pest control service workers say the trend is nothing to worry about if homeowners follow a few simple steps. To keep ants, ticks and spiders out of your house, be careful to seal any cracks and crevices on outside walls. Other smart tips include draining any standing puddles and storing woodpiles several yards away from the foundation.

Another outdoor line of defense against eager insects is practicing careful sanitation in flower beds and gardens. Keep your planting areas well-raked and be sure to collect and bag any fallen fruits and leaves before they have a chance to decompose. What looks like spoiled vegetables to us can be a prized home and larder for a hungry pest.

Identify the type of pest

Some parts of the country will also start to show signs of fire ants, with their telltale mounds rising above flat lawns. Those anthills are a sign that worker ants have woken up from their winter sleep, and are industriously building mounds high enough to rise above the soaked spring soil. If you catch them early enough, common baits can discourage these potentially painful pests from choosing your yard. But finding an advanced ant population is usually a good sign you need to call a local pest control company, such as Abell Pest Control.

Another reason to call in the professionals is to make sure you've correctly identified the ants in your yard. Some species are merely a nuisance, but others can be a health hazard (like those fire ants), and still others pose a threat to your home's structure (such as carpenter ants). Make sure you know which type of ant you're seeing before trying to tackle the problem yourself, and don't be shy about calling a pest inspection service before it gets out of hand.
